Sans Souci Premier League Champion of Champions - 2005
Sans Souci Premier League enjoyed a purple patch of success through the middle of the decade which included a rare double of first and reserve grade victories in the 2004 St George Association season.
Reserve grade were to repeat the Grand Final victory in 2005 but first grade couldn't match the feat and were beaten in their Grand Final despite taking the Minor Premiership that year.
The 2005 season however saw one of the great Sans Souci teams of all time win arguably the most prestigious award in amateur football when they took out the Football NSW All Age Champion of Champions title.
The Champion of Champions competition sees the best team in each association from each age group across NSW compete in a statewide knock out at the end of the normal season.
After the heartbreak of losing the 2005 Grand Final, Sans Souci had to pick themselves back up and get back to training after the season had finished and have a serious crack at the Champion of Champions title.
It also saw many players (including me) playing in their first Champions comp after in some cases 30 years of playing football. Interestingly we also had a collection of guys that had previously won a Champion of Champions title together at Sans Souci when they were juniors. So this was extra special for them and we all wanted to play our best for each other and try to win and cap off a succesful season.
We didn't really know what to expect from our opponents but we knew from the previous two seasons that All Saints Oatley West had won the same competition for St George so we felt that we could potentially also go all the way.
We were to field a fantastic team of youth and experience which included ex NSL players such as goalkeeper Chris Roche, player/coach Nick Orlic and striker Louie Dounis. Nick would hand the coaching reigns to Peter Dimitriadis for the Champions comp to concentrate on a swansong end to both his and Louie's playing careers.
Most of the guys have admitted that we were fortunate to even make the final considering the stoppage time goal in the quarter final and 2 late goals in the semi to win both games at the death. It showed the character of the team that we would never lie down until the final whistle but we could have easily lost both games.
The semi final against Brookvale in particular was one of those games where Sans Souci would shake their heads at the end wondering how we got away with the win. It was goalkeeper Chris Roche's outstanding performance that won the game for us that day. It was easily the best display I have seen from a goalkeeper in my playing career.
The final however was a different story and Sans Souci played fantastic football despite the fact we went a goal down early in the game. We would go on to have the better of play over 90 minutes and history will show that we would go on to defeat Bankstown Sports 2-1 in the final at Valentine Sports Complex.
Louie Dounis and Chris Xipolitas were the scorers on the day with the latter goal coming with only minutes to play. It would be an amazing victory after a long and arduous season.
