Grand Final Results - Updated

posted by darren on Aug. 31, 2010

Congratulations to all teams who contested their respective grand finals over the past two weekends. Our under 14C's and All Age Women's team were unfortunately both beaten on the weekend but they have both had fantastic seasons.

Of the 8 grand finals contested we had 4 wins, 1 draw and 3 losses.

Under 14C's v Carss Park

Result 1-3 Loss

Both Carss Park and Sans Souci teams had great years where they both only had the two losses for the season and were only separated by two points on the table. The semi final two weeks ago ended in a 0-0 draw with Carss Park progressing on the higher position rule.

Sans Souci qualified for the Grand Final with a 1-0 victory over Hurstville Glory in the final last week. The Grand Final would be a battle between the Carss Park attack against the Sans Souci defence which had only conceeded 15 goals in 17 games during the season.

In the end the 3-1 result would be enough to hand Carss Park the title in a great game. Congratulations to them.

All Age Women v Carlton Rovers

Result 1-2 Loss

This would be our all age womens teams second trip to the grand final in three years. After another great year which saw them finish the regular season in third spot behind a Carlton team which had two losses all season and a Connells Point team who finished one point ahead.

It was clear Sans Souci would need to be at their best against a Carlton team who had scored 68 goals and only conceeded 8 in 17 games all year. It is a credit to our ladies team to have scored in the GF and they were most certainly not disgraced.

In what was the worst conditions for football with 100km gale force winds hampering play, it took the Sans Souci ladies about 20 minutes to get into the game which also saw them conceed an early goal. After a terrific save by goalkeeper Diana it lifted the spirits of the team and it saw them finish the half well and saw them which the better of play.

The second half was much the same but we couldn't put away any chances and then mid way through the second half saw the referee award a questionable penalty to Carlton which they converted to take a 2 nil lead.

With the team up against a 2 goal deficit most teams would pack their bags but a credit to the ladies who fought all the way til the end. With time almost up for the game goalkeeper Diana went forward into the Carlton penalty area for a Sans Souci corner which saw her chest the ball down to set up a late goal for Erin to score.

The ladies were brave in defeat and long after the game were in high spirits in what has been another great year for them. It also must be mentioned that many of our all age team has come from our under 16 and under 18 girls who are more than willing to back up even after their own games. Special thanks to Chelsea, Sarah, Izzy, Tara, Carly, Jacqui, Demi, Liz and Mariana.

Would also like to thank - Paul, Bill, Mel, Mal, Larry and all of the supporters who come down to cheer us on.

Under 12 Girls v Connells Point

Result 1-1 Draw

The under 12 girls are officially our unluckiest team after they lost the title on the higher placed team rule. In what is a fantastic rivalry which has carried on from last year, the Connells Point team won the minor premiership with no losses and only one draw during the season. That draw was incidentally against our own Sans Souci girls.

Sans Souci defeated Connells Point in the semi final only two weeks ago which ended up being their only loss for the season and they could not be separated in the grand final which ended in a 1-1 draw. Of course the rules state that the highest placed team during the season is awarded the win in the event of a draw. But that seems a little harsh for a team that finished their season with a win/draw record compared to a loss/draw record??

In any case it was a fantastic result for the girls and they have achieved the only team to beat Connells Point during the year and they were not actually beaten during the finals. Well done girls.

What's the solution? I think the higher placed team rule should only apply in the semis. Considering Sans Souci defeated Connells in the semi they should then become the higher placed team? Maybe a poll question for another day:)

Under 13 A's v Connells Point

Result 1-0 Win

This was the dream game, similar to the under 12 girls, Connells Point and Sans Souci have enjoyed a rivalry that spans over 4 years. Connells in the past has enjoyed the better share of results and Sans Souci's victory in the semi final was one of their only wins against Connells in that time.

Scores were locked at 0-0 after a tug of war first half which saw Sans Souci have a few chances but could not quite put them away.

With the second half 14 minutes old a through ball by George Kinezo to Guy Nappa saw him round the keeper and put the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

With the rest of the game going from end to end, it was in the first minute of stoppage time that after a Connells break away the Sans Souci keeper Paul De Lucca junior was judged to have clipped the Connells Point player and a penalty was awarded.

With no time left on the clock the subsequent penalty was hit low and hard to Paul's left and he chose correctly and saved what would be the equalising goal to send the game into extra time.

The game continued for another 10 seconds when the referee finally called an end to the game with Sans Souci victorious and it sent the Sans Souci players into raptures.

What a fantastic season for the boys and congratulations to them all.

Premier League Reserve Grade v Lugarno

Result 1-0 Win

This was the 11th straight finals series for the PL Reserve Grade team and the 10th anniversary of the grand final win of 2000. It's been well documented that in those 11 years the Reserve Grade team have played 8 grand finals and this was to be the teams fifth win.

After the disappointment of last season's GF loss there was plenty of incentive for a lot of the guys who were backing up for another chance against a Lugarno side who had been the form team in the second half of the season.

After Minor Premiers Scots FC were beaten by both Sans Souci and Lugarno in the finals it would be teams 2 and 3 who would fight out for the title for season 2010.

It would be a game of two contrasting styles, a young Lugarno side with the best attack in the comp versus the more experienced (older) and best defence in the league in Sans Souci.

As seems to be the norm for grand final day we were greeted by another gorgeous sunny afternoon but yet another August wind would play a part in the game.

Sans Souci would dominate the opening exchanges and were creating chances out wide with Anthony Bava a stand out at right midfield giving the Lugarno defence headaches with his speed and skill.

The best chance coming mid way through the first half where a goal box exchange saw the ball bouncing awkwardly and after various air swings from both sides it was Marcelo Alvarez who somehow got a foot to the ball and he poked it into the roof of the net from 10 yards. A fantastic and deserved early goal for Sans Souci.

The first half break seemed to be upon us when Lugarno who had started to make inroads into the Souci defence in the last 10 minutes found a break down the left side which saw the ball crossed dangerously into the penalty box. One of the Lugarno players broke through from the midfield and got a great touch on the ball which beat Linsay in goal and wobbled it's way into what was surely the equaliser. Incredibly the ball bounced and rolled and hit the base of the post only to roll across the face of goal and hit the opposite post and was somehow cleared by Sans Souci to secure their 1 nil lead at half time.

The second half was not only a battle against our opponents but the elements with the wind arguably becoming stronger which ended up making defensive clearances extremely difficult. Lugarno probably had the better of the possession and field position in the second half as they were chasing the game, but the Sans Souci defence was excellent and we even created some real chances at the other end with Joel Di Biasi and Marcelo playing fantastic up front.

After what seemed like an eternal last 10 minutes, the Sans Souci defence of keeper Linsay MacMahon, Nuno Marques, Mick Cunningham and Ross Di Biasi with the help from our fantastic substitutes held strong and kept our goal intact to keep the final 1 nil scoreline to win the premiership for 2010.

In addition to our defence, Joel Di Biasi was fantastic up front in his first year at Sans Souci, as was Anthony Bava who has come up from our under 18's team last year.

Although the season ended on a successful note, there was no shortness of drama through the year which saw us go through 3 coaches at the start of the year including our first grade coach. As is usually the case with a successful team we had to lose many players to play first grade but our strength at Sans Souci is the depth and quality of the squad and we have shown again that Sans Souci has the best "squad" in the competition. I am a firm believer that it is harder to win a reserve grade comp than it is to win a first grade comp. It is a huge balancing act which we have done really well in the past 11 years.

On behalf of the team I would again like to thank Peter D and Denis Coso for their great service to the coaching team and to the many supporters who have turned up each week to support both teams.

I would personally like to thank Mick for giving me the opportunity to collect the trophy on behalf of the team in what was my 10th season at this wonderful club. I know I hinted at retirement during the presentation but you guys make it damn hard to stop playing (think John Farnham's Last Time tour).

There will be some pics of the game and the celebrations in the coming days.

All Age A's v Forest Rangers

Result 2-1 Win

This grand final victory was a long time in the making. Some players have waited 15 odd years for this win and how sweet it would be.

Forest Rangers were essentially relegated from Premier League last year at the hands of Sans Souci after Souci scored a late goal in the third last game. So the sight of another Sans Souci team in an All Age A Grand Final would surely haunt them for years to come.

This game was also a replay of two past Prem Lge Reserve grade grand finals in 2002 and 2005. Both those games saw a share of the spoils with Rangers winning in 2002 and Souci gaining revenge in 2005. In other words for Forest Rangers there is a massive rivalry against Sans Souci.

Sans Souci after a slow start to the season would come home in the second round to clinch the Minor Premiership with a game to spare. One of only two teams to achieve the Minor Premiership for Sans Souci which is a huge achievement.

As far as the game is concerned I am still waiting on some match reports but what I do know is that Scott Johnson was the scorer of the winning goal in the final minutes after scores were locked 1-1 in the second half. A great result for Scott who is celebrating his 20th year at the club.

In a first for the club and also we believe for the St George association, Sans Souci's first placing will also see them promoted to Premier League in season 2011 to join our current Premier League team. Meaning double trouble to all other opponents of Sans Souci PL next year. What is in store is yet to be seen.

Congratulations to the All Age guys on a fantastic season. I hope to have some more news in the coming weeks on the match itself.
